On March 15, 2009, the 12.23-kilometer asphalt pavement section of Beijing's Chang'an Avenue (from Sihui Bridge to Fuxingmen Bridge) commenced a comprehensive overhaul using a nighttime construction schedule with daytime traffic operations.

This project served as a commemorative engineering feat for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and must be completed before National Day. Due to the tight schedule and heavy workload, the reliability and efficiency of construction equipment were subjected to nearly苛刻的要求.

Twelve ABG 8820 pavers equipped with dual-hammer high-density hydraulic screeds demonstrated outstanding paving quality and stable performance, earning high praise from both the client and the construction team. This success laid a solid foundation for the subsequent adoption of ABG 8820 pavers in multiple major renovation projects across Beijing.

The Beijing Fourth Ring Road, spanning 65.3 km, is one of the busiest urban expressways in the capital, connecting eight highways including the Beijing-Harbin and Beijing-Shanghai Expressways, as well as dozens of major urban roads, bearing immense traffic pressure.

From early March to July 20, 2025, the Beijing Municipal Road Maintenance and Management Center organized construction teams to carry out a comprehensive major repair of the asphalt pavement on the eastern section of the Fourth Ring Road (from the south of Siyuan Bridge to the west of Shiyaliudian Bridge) using a nighttime construction schedule with daytime traffic operations.

The main section of the Dongsi Fourth Ring Road spans 15.56 km and has been in operation for 20 years since its last major renovation in 2005. The road surface exhibited severe issues such as cracking, rutting, and damaged bridge expansion joints, with some sections showing a damage rate as high as 12%. To address the engineering challenges, the Beijing Municipal Urban Road Maintenance and Management Center adopted a major repair plan involving the complete milling of the original pavement followed by the full-line laying of high-elastic modified asphalt.

The primary tasks during the pre-construction phase include utility relocation and upgrading the intelligent transportation system, which involves: installing IoT sensors to monitor road temperature, load, and cracks in real time; adding 5G-V2X roadside devices to enable autonomous vehicles to access traffic light and congestion information; and installing smart poles that integrate lighting, traffic monitoring, and weather monitoring functions.

The heavy workload and high construction difficulty led to delays in the main project. It wasn't until June 30, 2025, that road construction officially began. To minimize construction impact and ensure traffic flow, construction was scheduled during late-night hours, with temporary lane markings applied during the day to restore traffic. The limited construction window required higher standards for paving equipment: operational efficiency, paving quality, stability, and reliability were all essential.

In this context, the ABG 8820 was once again entrusted with a critical role. Over 40 ABG 8820 pavers were deployed for the Dongsi Fourth Ring Road renovation project. Such large-scale concentrated application clearly demonstrates the full confidence of the client and construction company in ABG equipment.

This trust stems from ABG 8820's leading position in multiple key technologies and its "service-oriented" philosophy.

  • The dual-rammer screed achieves an initial compaction rate of over 90%, providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for the pavement compaction process (reducing the number of compaction passes while improving compaction quality).

  • Configurations such as the screed loading device, tension adjustment device, screed lock, and anti-climbing lock enhance paving smoothness and layer thickness uniformity.

  • The ABG 8820 paver's critical components (engine, hydraulic oil pump, hydraulic motor, hydraulic control valves, etc.) are all sourced from internationally renowned brands, ensuring reliable and stable equipment performance.

  • The third-generation Electronic Paving Management System (EPM3) is simple and intuitive, fully unlocking the potential of the equipment's intelligent design. The main controller (MCU) and two side controllers (SCU) share information while maintaining mutual control; a standard emergency operation mode ensures that if any control panel fails, the other three panels take over all functions and continue construction operations.

  • When delivering ABG pavers, the professional Ammann after-sales team provides operators with comprehensive training programs to help them quickly master equipment performance and operational techniques. Combined with its long-standing durability and low maintenance costs, the ABG 8820 has become a reliable and efficient choice for construction companies.

The Beijing Fourth Ring Road renovation is not merely an infrastructure upgrade but a concrete implementation of the concept of high-quality development. The Beijing Municipal Road Maintenance and Management Center has taken a comprehensive approach, focusing on materials, technology, and management, to actively promote the green transformation of the entire construction production chain and build green projects. As a core component of this project, the ABG 8820 carries the experience accumulated from the Chang'an Avenue to the Fourth Ring Road, and is writing a new chapter in the upgrading of the urban road network.
